Art in Therapy

Let’s be very clear, art therapy has nothing to do with your artistic ability.

You may have never drawn a picture or painted a scene in your life, but you will have no problem expressing yourself through this process.

Nor will you ever be judged on your outcome.

Art Therapy is a scientific clinical approach that uses creativity as its primary mode of communication. Dating back to the early Freudian days, it is a multisensory approach therapy that incorporates neuroscience methodology and can be very powerful during times of crisis, trauma, grief, depression, anger, or a change in circumstances.

It differs from other psychological treatments in that it is a three-way process between the client, the therapist and the creation. It allows you to relax and express nonverbally by creating, which in turn gives the subconscious space to be seen.

It is very good for clients who…

  • May not want to initially talk, especially teenagers, or young children

  • Those who want to tell you what their problem is, and want a quick solution (The problem is rarely what you think it is)

  • Or those who simply have no idea where to start and feel overwhelmed.

It can help to identify emotional cues and activate your subconscious to recognise stressors and catalysts that trigger your mind and body. The same state as the fight or flight response that can take control when we are faced with a situation, either from or similar to, our lived subconscious memory.

At Discover and Thrive, each client has a unique journey that they own; no two clients are the same. We will help you discover the right tools specific to you, that you can use at any time.
